Union Berlin have sold 21-year-old Ilyas Ansah to Hull City during the recent transfer window. The fee for the young player's transfer could reach a total of 24 million euros, as manager Horst Heldt confirmed to Bild Sport. The Iron Ones start the new season with one point from two games and currently sit in 15th place in the Bundesliga standings.

Horst Heldt, the manager of Union Berlin, detailed the negotiation process. The initial offer from the English club was not satisfactory. Heldt emphasised his negotiation principle: "The first offer was not nice. I also don't just accept my first offer, on the contrary." The talks revolved around the fixed base fee and potential bonus payments. The final deal includes a fixed transfer fee of 17 million euros, which can rise by up to seven million euros through performance-related add-ons.

A key point was that Hull City, despite having a budget of around 100 million euros following promotion to the Premier League, complained about financial constraints. At the same time, the club wanted to sign ten to twenty new players. Heldt pointed out that there was no other interest in Ansah in this price category besides Hull City. "There was no other club besides Hull City that was interested in Ansah in this price category." said the Union manager.

With the proceeds from the sale, Union Berlin now has additional capital for their own squad assembly. However, finding a replacement for Ansah's profile is proving difficult. The team is explicitly looking for a striker who is strong in aerial duels and good with his back to goal. Within their own price range, such a player has not been found so far. The club's transfer strategy remains clearly focused on young talents, with older players not being considered.

One internal talent set to benefit from this philosophy is 19-year-old Mekhi Gray. He has been promised regular playing time by the decision-makers and is to be promoted deliberately. The current Bundesliga record of three goals scored and seven conceded highlights the need for a more stable defence, which will be required in the coming matches.

Union Berlin are under slight pressure with one point from their first two season games. The team is five points behind leaders FC Augsburg. The next home game on 21 November against currently eighth-placed RB Leipzig will be an important task. Preparation for this match and further fixtures can be tracked on the fixtures page. The squad tasked with meeting these challenges is listed in the current squad overview. The completion of the Ansah transfer now gives the club financial leeway to strengthen the team specifically and achieve their season objectives.
