Alexander Schwolow Joins Mainz
Alexander Schwolow, a seasoned defender who previously played for Union Berlin, has signed with Bundesliga club Mainz. The 34-year-old's transfer comes after he spent a single season at Heart of Midlothian F.C., where his time was marked by disappointment.
Schwolow joined Hearts in the middle of the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season, just as Sturm Graz advanced past Hearts in the Champions League preliminary qualifiers. The Austrian side secured a 6-0 aggregate win over Hearts, which left Schwolow with mixed feelings about his time at the Scottish club.
Previous Experiences and Current Situation
Schwolow's career has seen him play for several top German clubs, including Freiburg, Hertha BSC, Schalke, and Union Berlin. His move to Mainz is part of their preparation for a new season under coach Urs Fischer, who previously managed Schwolow at Union Berlin.
The former Germany youth international's last appearance in the Champions League was with Union Berlin, where he made seven appearances after the departure of Swiss coach Urs Fischer. Meanwhile, Hearts will now face Benfica in the Europa League qualifying tie following their exit from the Champions League.
Mainz has also seen some changes in goalkeeping as their second-choice goalkeeper Daniel Batz joined Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer last month. Schwolow's addition to Mainz is expected to bolster their defense for the upcoming season.
