Middlesbrough Struggles to Re-sign Emmanuel Latte Lath
Middlesbrough had high hopes of re-acquiring Emmanuel Latte Lath after selling him to MLS side Atlanta United for £22.5m in January 2025. However, visa rules have thwarted their efforts. The Daily Mail reports that Middlesbrough attempted a loan deal but was stymied by the need for UK visa points, which are currently insufficient for Latte Lath.
Struggles at Atlanta United
Since leaving Middlesbrough in the middle of the 2024/25 season, Latte Lath has faced challenges. He scored 11 goals and provided three assists in 29 games with Boro before moving to Atlanta United. In his first campaign there, he managed eight goals and three assists in 32 appearances. However, his performance dipped significantly in the 2026 season; as Atlanta United struggled in the Eastern Conference, Latte Lath found himself out of favor, missing two consecutive matches.
Union Berlin Sees Opportunity
Despite these setbacks, Union Berlin is now looking to bring Latte Lath into their squad. The striker’s experience and goal-scoring ability could be a valuable asset for the Bundesliga club. However, his current situation with Atlanta United means that a transfer is likely imminent.
Verdict: Middlesbrough's Need Reassessed
Middlesbrough may not need another striker this summer, given their current lineup. Kim Hellberg’s squad already boasts depth at the forward position, with players like Will Lankshear and Kyle Joseph competing for the number nine shirt. Additionally, Kaly Sene remains on the books, and young talent Cruz Ibeh is in the pipeline.
The situation with Latte Lath highlights the complexities of player transfers, especially when visa regulations come into play. While Middlesbrough and Burnley were unable to make a deal, Union Berlin appears well-positioned to secure his services.
