Union Berlin is planning new transfers for the summer to strengthen the squad for new coach Mauro Lustrinelli. Manager Horst Heldt has already signed two new defenders, Marvin Friedrich and Zeno van den Bosch, who will join the club on a free transfer. The departures of Diogo Leite and Danilho Doekhi have been compensated. Now, Heldt must rebuild the squad so that Lustrinelli can implement his ideas. Union is set to become more offensive, press early and then switch quickly. Create more chances from the game, rather than waiting for standards like in the past. The problem is that the squad was not designed for this. In midfield, players are missing who can play the ball precisely into dangerous areas and thus create scoring opportunities. András Schäfer, Rani Khedira, and Janik Haberer are more ball winners than distributors. Up front, there is a significant lack of goals. Livan Burcu, Ilyas Ansah, and Dmytro Bogdanov still need to develop. The more experienced Woo-Yeong Jeong, Oliver Burke, and Andrej Ilic lacked consistency. Tim Skarke is harmless, he's already on the verge of leaving. Union needs transfer revenue to sign new players. The difficulty is that the budget of the Iron Ones is limited. New transfers should be paid for with sales revenue. These are still missing at Union. This leads to the third goal: Heldt must find a new club for the candidates to leave, in order to buy new, suitable players for Lustrinelli. Khedira is being linked with a move to Gladbach. And there are also transfer rumors surrounding Ilic – specifically, Fulham and Coventry are said to be interested in the Serb. Additionally, goalkeeper Matheo Raab is on the list at Hannover. Union's three goals are clear: get rid of candidates to leave, sell more players, and strengthen the midfield and offense.
